The Government has introduced amendments to Parliament to make it easier for region and rural councils to axe Melbourne Cup Holiday in favour for time off for local events such as field days. Under the amendments, country councils may dump the Cup Day holiday in favour of two half-day holidays or one full-day at another time of the year.
The Victorian Trades Hall Council has vowed to block this policy. The liberalisation of public holiday laws will certainly create confusion, with different government backing different holidays. The amendments, that is likely to pass through later this year, will affect hundreds of thousands of Victorians.
