While the impact of wireless technology in warehouse and transportation management was discussed in the late 90s and the industry was quick to “cut the cord” on wired and paper systems, the transition is still not complete. This means an ever increasing role for wireless devices and middleware.
Bar code technology is still the tracking system of choice which we are all familiar with even in our daily transaction, RFID (radio frequency identification) is putting an increasing pressure on bar coding to justify its relevance in the materials tracking sector.
RFID advocates loudly proclaim that bar coding systems will be a thing of past soon, but a more likely future scenario will see the co-existence between the two.
Each system has its place and a successful smart supply chain of the future will take advantage of both.
