The Australian of the Year for 2012 has been awarded to Geoffrey Rush. Prime minister Julia Gilliard presented the acclaimed actor with the award at the public event held on the lawns of Parliament house in Canberra. Celebrating 40 years as an Australian actor, Mr Rush has the rare distinction as an internationally praised triple crown actor – holding an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy award for his talented performances.

Aspiring roboticist, Marita Cheng was named Young Australian of the Year 2012. The Melbourne University student, plans to use the recognition for her continuous push to have more women in engineering.
