A $759 million project, the Peninsula Link commenced construction in 2010 to bring benefits to people living, working and visiting Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.
Financed by the Southern Way consortium, the project is due for completion in 2013, with the help of Australian made steel company ARC.
ARC, which has manufactured and supplied steel reinforcing to large-scale infrastructure projects across Australia for over 90 years, is continuing to deliver steel daily to the site to assist in meeting the December deadline for completion. Peninsula Link is expected to be open to motorists in early 2013.
Abigroup, a member of the Southern Way Consortium, had contracted ARC as the preferred supplier to supply steel reinforcement to all aspects of the Peninsula Link, including prefabricated column cages, precast t-beams, reinforcement for precast units and in-situ reinforcement.
In a statement from the company, ARC provided pre-cast tolerance steel for placement into the t-beams to ensure it was precise for the functionality of supporting the construction. According to ARC’s Tony Bonanno, “Providing off-site fabrication of the cages and barriers for the project allowed us to deliver fully assembled complete units which helps with safety and productivity.”
ARC revealed that with 8000 tonnes of reinforcement being delivered to 160 delivery points, communication between dispatch, drivers and engineers was critical.
“We ensured that all drivers were fully inducted to meet OH&S requirements and remote cranes or dogmen were utilised for each delivery,” said Craig Myers, Key Account Manager – Contract Bar, ARC.
With a 27km dual carriage motorway between the EastLink toll road in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Mt Martha, the Peninsula Link is noted as a first of its kind in the Australian road sector. Southern Way is said to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Peninsula Link, with the Government providing quarterly payments for the delivery of ongoing services based on key performance indicators.
