Clayton, Australia – Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services, has announced its intention to be carbon neutral worldwide by 2020.

“We will be the first major industrial enterprise to achieve the ambitious goal of carbon neutrality in a little over a year,” said Dr. Volkmar Denner, chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH. “All 400 Bosch locations across the globe will be carbon neutral from 2020.”

In Australia, Bosch is accelerating local measures to achieve this goal within the next twelve months. This comes at a time when the Australian bushfire season has once again ignited the debate on the effects of climate change in this country.

“It’s important to increase our efforts,” said Gavin Smith, President of Bosch Oceania. “Bosch has always exceeded its previous goals to reduce CO2 emissions, however more can be done and the time is now,” he said.

“We want our customers to have the assurance that the technology and services they are purchasing have been manufactured in a responsible and sustainable manner,” Smith explained.

To achieve its climate goal, Bosch will focus on four main levers: increasing site energy efficiency, generating new clean power, procuring green electricity, and offsetting any unavoidable CO2 emissions in equal measure.

Bosch Australia is aiming to achieve a 10-15% reduction in energy demand at its Clayton headquarters in 2020. Upgrades already completed at the site include installation of high-efficiency boilers and LED lighting in all buildings.

Work has also commenced on the installation of over 3,000 solar panels, which will begin generating renewable energy for the site in 2020. Energy requirements that exceed what the company can generate will be procured from green electricity sources.

Moreover, Bosch Australia will compensate for any unavoidable CO2 emissions with local carbon offsets. When choosing a project, it will apply high standards and focus on biodiversity projects within Australia.

In the years to 2030, the global company will progressively increase the share of renewable energy in the power that it generates and buys, and will invest over a billion euros to boost its locations’ energy efficiency.
