Local steel fabricator AGC has been awarded a manufacturing contract by Chevron. Under the contract, AGC will manufacture 7,500 tonnes of pipe spool for the Gorgon project. WA premier Colin Barnett welcomed this news, saying the contract will give local manufacturing industry a boost. It demonstrates that local manufacturing industry can be globally competitive for appropriate work scopes.
The Chevron-Gorgon project is the biggest resource project and has delivered more than 3,000 jobs to Australian industry, spreading through Perth’s metropolitan area and across Australia. AGC is a service provider to the oil and gas, mining and resources, power and maintenance industries. The company fabricates pipes, pressure vessels, tanks, structural steels and mechanical handling equipments.
Local manufacturing industry have been suffering a decline due to the high yielding Australian dollar. WA state government intends to announce in coming weeks a revised approach to local manufacturing industry participation.
