Australian Institute: ETS Have Next to No Impact on Mining Jobs

While the Federal Opposition says carbon tax would cost thousands of jobs and more than a dozen coal mines, public policy Think Tank put the view to test. The results?

Based on labour force data from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and Household and Income Labour Dynamics of Australia (HILDA) surveys from 2001 – 2008, the research found that over a decade, the average projected unemployment rate per annum would only be 0.016 percentage points higher.

Worker turnover is a big factor within mining industry, with between 26 to 36 per cent of employees joining or leaving every year.


Gillard government plans to release details of ETS within weeks, which is scheduled to come into effect in July 2012.
