The Federal Government has announced $5 million in funding for a national campaign to encourage Australians to support their local small businesses as restrictions are being gradually lifted across the country.

Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash urged Australians to ‘get behind small businesses’ in their local communities to help them continue trading or to re-open.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. We have over 3.5 million small businesses across the country, making up nearly half the national workforce,” Minister Cash said.

“They are a vital part of our COVID-19 recovery.”

The national campaign will be run by the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA) and will seek to foster an awareness of the important role of small business in the economy and community.

CEO of COSBOA, Peter Strong added: “A national campaign dedicated to encouraging support for small business is a welcome initiative and COSBOA are proud to be tasked with galvanising the community.”

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our communities – these are our brothers and sisters, our mums and dads, our friends.

“We encourage Australians to buy and spend local, and get behind small business on the road to recovery.”
