Hazer Group has entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Finnish chemicals company Kemira to assess the potential industrial application of Hazer’s methane pyrolysis technology.

In a statement, the Perth-based company said the agreement will see the two firms evaluate both the technical and commercial feasibility of deploying Hazer’s proprietary technology and related products across Kemira’s global operations.

It noted the collaboration will also include testing of Hazer’s low-emissions carbon material, known as Hazer Graphite, in water treatment applications.

Kemira is a global chemicals company headquartered in Finland, operating in more than 40 countries and serving water-intensive industries such as water treatment, pulp and paper, and industrial processing.

The company is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki and reported annual revenue of EUR2.95 billion, or about AUD5.1 billion, in 2024.

Under the terms of the MOU, Kemira will assess the feasibility of integrating Hazer’s methane pyrolysis technology into its industrial processes.

It noted that if the initial technical and commercial assessments are favourable, the parties have agreed to discuss potential forms of commercial collaboration, which may include technology licensing arrangements and/or product offtake agreements. The MOU has an initial term of one year, with each party responsible for its own costs.

Hazer chief executive officer and managing director Glenn Corrie said the agreement reflected growing interest in methane pyrolysis as an alternative pathway for hydrogen production and low-emissions carbon materials.

“We are delighted to partner with Kemira, a global leader in sustainable chemical solutions for water-intensive industries,” Corrie said.

“This collaboration further validates Hazer’s position as a leading provider of methane pyrolysis technology and highlights the growing interest in Hazer Graphite. We look forward to collaborating with Kemira to explore the potential for Hazer’s world-leading technology in the Nordics.”

Kemira executive vice president of research and innovation Sampo Lahtinen said the company viewed the technology as a promising option worth further investigation, while noting that the agreement is focused on evaluation rather than commitment to deployment.

“We have identified Hazer’s technology to be very exciting and advanced, and we look forward to working with Hazer to investigate the integration of Hazer’s innovative technology across Kemira’s operations,” Lahtinen said.

Hazer said the collaboration does not create binding obligations beyond the agreed evaluation activities and does not guarantee a commercial outcome.

The company added that any future commercial arrangements would be subject to further negotiation and the results of the feasibility studies.
