HILT CRC, a research institute based in Adelaide’s city centre, has announced that POSCO Holdings has joined its growing international network, marking what the organisation describes as a significant step in accelerating global collaboration on low-emission steel technologies.

In a news release, the Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC) said POSCO, a major South Korean steelmaker, will take part in research and industry engagement initiatives focused on developing low-carbon ironmaking solutions.

HILT CRC noted that POSCO sources around 70 per cent of its iron ore from Australia, and said the company’s decision to join the centre reflects the increasing alignment between Australian research efforts and international industry needs as the sector moves toward a lower-emissions future.

Jenny Selway, CEO of HILT CRC, said the addition of POSCO marks an important milestone in the organisation’s work to support heavy industry’s transition to net-zero emissions.

“POSCO’s leadership in the global steel industry and its strategy for developing low-carbon steelmaking will contribute to heavy industry’s transition to a net-zero future,” Selway said.

“Their participation in HILT CRC underscores the significance of global collaboration in addressing the need for sustainable solutions in steel production.”

HILT CRC has created a new membership category aimed at large global steelmakers and companies with strong business ties to its Core and Key Partners.

It noted that POSCO is the first company to join under this category, giving the steelmaker access to research insights, industry events and networking opportunities across HILT’s collaborative network.

According to HILT CRC, the partnership will allow POSCO to strengthen its involvement in the global shift toward low-emission steelmaking while deepening its long-standing connection to Australia’s resources sector.

“We see tremendous value in collaborating with HILT CRC,” said Jinchul Baung, POSCO’s primary representative for the partnership.

“As the global steel industry faces pressure to reduce emissions, innovative low-carbon ironmaking technologies will be pivotal to achieving our sustainability targets.”
