The Victorian Government has announced new funding to support projects aimed at improving safety and reducing workplace injuries across the state’s manufacturing industry.

In a news release, Deputy Premier and Minister for WorkSafe and the TAC Ben Carroll said applications are now open for the latest round of the WorkSafe Grants program, which focuses on preventing hazards and improving safety in manufacturing workplaces.

It noted that grants of up to $300,000 are available for initiatives that strengthen workplace safety, build skills and awareness of risks, and encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing across the industry.

“Through these WorkSafe grants, we’re empowering businesses to develop practical solutions that protect workers from both current and emerging safety risks as our manufacturing sector rapidly grows,” Carroll said.

According to the government, manufacturing has been identified as a priority industry for WorkSafe’s enforcement and harm prevention activities, with common workplace hazards including body stress, falls, trips and slips, and being struck by moving or falling objects.

It noted that although manufacturing accounts for around eight per cent of Victoria’s workforce, it represented more than one in ten WorkCover claims accepted in the last financial year. So far this year, WorkSafe has accepted over 2,000 claims from manufacturing workers.

Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing Colin Brooks said the program is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to ensure worker safety remains a key priority across the sector.

“Every Victorian deserves a safe work environment, which is why we are helping our manufacturers create safer workplaces,” Brooks said.

WorkSafe Chief Executive Officer Ash West said the grants align with the regulator’s broader strategy to reduce workplace harm in high-risk sectors.

“As part of WorkSafe’s strategy to reduce workplace fatalities and injuries, we’re focusing on priority industries, such as manufacturing, where the most harm is occurring,” West said.

The government stated eligible organisations, including employers, local community groups, and employee or employer associations, can apply for the latest round of funding until Wednesday, 3 December.
