Business turnover in Australia rose by 2.9 per cent in July in seasonally adjusted terms, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Robert Ewing, ABS head of business statistics, said the rise was the largest monthly increase since May 2022, with growth recorded across all industries.
“The Electricity, gas, water and waste division grew 15.8 per cent due to a surge in wholesale electricity and gas prices. This division is now at a record high, breaking the previous record set in August 2022,” Ewing said.
The ABS reported that manufacturing turnover grew by 4.2 per cent in July, contributing strongly to the overall rise.
Over the year to July 2025, manufacturing recorded a 13.2 per cent increase, making it one of the strongest performing industries alongside electricity, gas, water and waste services, which rose 16.2 per cent annually.
Other notable monthly increases were seen in professional, scientific and technical services, up 4.6 per cent, and construction, which lifted 3.8 per cent.
Across the 13 industries measured, 12 recorded annual rises compared with July 2024, leading to a 6.3 per cent increase in aggregate business turnover.
According to ABS, the only annual decline was in mining, which fell 1.7 per cent.
In trend terms, the 13-industry aggregate showed a 0.3 per cent rise in turnover for the month.
The ABS said the Monthly Business Turnover Indicator is based on Australian Taxation Office Business Activity Statement data from businesses with annual GST turnover of $20 million or more, along with some smaller businesses that report monthly.
