IKEA Australia has teamed up with Loftus Pies, an Australian family-owned local manufacturer, to launch a limited-edition snack that fuses Swedish tradition with Aussie flavour.
Marking its 50th year in the country, IKEA has introduced the Meatball Party Pie – a bite-sized pastry blending the retailer’s iconic Swedish meatballs with the classic Australian party pie format.
The new product will be offered free across all 10 IKEA stores nationwide on Saturday, 31 May, for IKEA Family members, as part of a weekend of festivities, IKEA said in a news release.
The pie is a first-of-its-kind globally for IKEA and reflects the brand’s enduring connection with Australian consumers – not just through flat-packed furniture, but also through its food offerings, which have become a beloved part of the in-store experience.
In particular, the Meatball Party Pie was developed in close collaboration with Loftus Pies, a local supplier based in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.
“The Meatball pie is certainly not something we’ve done before, so we spent time with the IKEA food team perfecting the recipe for the right amount of meatball to gravy to pastry,” said John Tsoutsas, Chief Pie Officer at Loftus Pies. “Australians are very particular about their pies, but we can’t wait for people to taste them!”
Wrapped in flaky golden pastry and topped with a dollop of Swedish lingonberry jam, the pie represents a unique blend of two cultural staples. A plant-based version using IKEA’s signature plant balls will also be available.
“We’ve taken the comfort of a classic Aussie party pie and combined it with the unmistakable flavour of our iconic Swedish meatballs,” said Tim Prevade, Country Food Manager for IKEA Australia. “It’s a fun, flavour-packed way to celebrate 50 years in Australia—with a twinkle in the eye that’s so very IKEA.”
Loftus Pies’ involvement highlights IKEA’s commitment to local collaboration and manufacturing, showcasing the potential of homegrown food producers to contribute to global retail experiences.
According to IKEA Australia, the pie is one part of a broader celebration running from 30 May to 2 June.
