Cleanaway has entered into a long-term agreement with Acciona to supply waste feedstock for the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility, which aims to divert waste from Western Australian landfills through the use of Energy from Waste (EfW) technology.
According to Cleanaway, the agreement, established in October 2025, is intended to provide a sustainable waste management solution by harnessing EfW processes to recover valuable resources that would otherwise be lost to landfill.
In a news release, the company said EfW plays an important role in the waste value chain and supports Australia’s transition to a circular economy by offering an alternative treatment for residual waste.
Rebecca Reeves, Cleanaway’s General Manager for WA/NT/SA Solid Waste Services, said the agreement would contribute to sustainability goals across the state.
“This long-term agreement with Acciona is great news for Cleanaway’s customers’ sustainability targets and at the same time will help the WA Government achieve their landfill diversion target of sending no more than 15% of waste to landfill by 2030,” Reeves said.
Cleanaway noted that EfW technology enables the recovery of materials such as metals and aggregates following thermal treatment, while also reducing methane emissions from landfills and generating electricity that can offset fossil fuel-based power generation.
“Waste is no longer viewed as having no value; waste is now recognised as a valuable resource that can be recovered, reused or recycled,” Reeves said. “I look forward to our growing relationship with Acciona and making a sustainable future possible, together.”
Scott Reynolds, General Manager at Kwinana Energy Recovery, said the partnership with Cleanaway reinforces the facility’s commitment to sustainable outcomes for the community.
“We are excited to be partnering with Cleanaway to reinforce KER’s commitment to reducing waste, improving recycling outcomes, and creating long-term value for our community and stakeholders,” Reynolds said.
“Together we bring extensive industry knowledge and a shared focus on innovation to deliver smarter, more sustainable outcomes and drive the move to a more circular economy.”
