Construction of the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program’s (QTMP) facility at Torbanlea is moving ahead, with Downer reporting major progress as wall cladding nears completion and specialist equipment installation begins.
As construction advances, Downer has launched a large-scale recruitment drive to support the manufacturing of 65 six-car passenger trains for the South East Queensland network.
In a news release, the company said around 200 frontline and 100 professional positions are being offered across multiple disciplines.
Opportunities include roles in electrical trades, fabrication, mechanical trades, painting, and semi-skilled assembly, along with professional roles in administration, planning and scheduling, quality and testing, production and operations management, and technical specialist areas.
QTMP People and Culture Director David Fowler said Downer was committed to fostering local skills and strengthening ties to the Fraser Coast.
“Downer has been part of the Fraser Coast’s rail history for more than 150 years, and we’re excited to continue that legacy through QTMP,” Fowler said.
He added that recruitment would be phased from 2026 as train manufacturing ramps up. “We’re looking to fill a wide range of positions at the Torbanlea facility. As one of Australia’s largest employers, we are committed to empowering local talent and delivering positive outcomes and growth for the communities in which we operate,” Fowler said.
According to Downer, available positions will be listed on its careers page, with interviews beginning in October 2025. Roles will progressively commence from early 2026, aligning with the start of train manufacturing.
The Queensland Government awarded Downer the QTMP contract in June 2023.
The program covers the design and delivery of 65 new six-car passenger trains at Torbanlea, along with maintenance and stabling facilities to be built at Ormeau on the Gold Coast.
