The Queensland Government has announced the official opening of the Maryborough Manufacturing Centre of Excellence, stating the upgraded facility will play a key role in expanding skills and training for Queensland’s advanced manufacturing workforce.
In a news release, the government said the $5 million upgrade – supported by an additional $2.1 million to operate the facility – will deliver “world-class training in advanced manufacturing” and open pathways into high-demand roles in rail, defence and energy.
According to the government, the centre is equipped with state-of-the-art precision machining tools, welding systems and automated manufacturing technology designed to mirror equipment used in modern industrial settings.
The government also noted the facility will support the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program and strengthen the region’s manufacturing capabilities after what it described as years of stalled projects and skills shortages.
Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Ros Bates said the Centre was central to the Government’s focus on rebuilding the state’s skilled workforce.
“We are delivering the skills Maryborough needs to lead Queensland’s manufacturing future,” Minister Bates said.
“This is about real jobs for local people, real careers in modern industry and a better lifestyle through a stronger regional economy.”
Minister for Manufacturing Dale Last said the investment reflected the Government’s commitment to strengthening regional industry.
“We are backing regional Queensland with investment that drives innovation and secures the workforce for tomorrow,” Minister Last said.
“This facility is crucial to ensuring we have the skilled workforce to deliver the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program and upcoming advanced manufacturing opportunities across our state.”
Member for Maryborough John Barounis said the Centre would support industry competitiveness and long-term growth.
“We are building a workforce that keeps Maryborough competitive and creates real opportunities for locals,” Barounis said. “This Centre means better training, better jobs and a stronger future for our region.”
Downer Executive General Manager, Passenger North/QTMP Project Director, Kamal Habibullah, said the Centre would provide the specialised skills required for the new train manufacturing facility at Torbanlea.
“Downer is proud to be Founding Partner for the MSQ Centre of Excellence in Maryborough,” Mr Habibullah said.
“While the Centre will ensure we have the talent pipeline for the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program, its benefits will extend well beyond, to wider manufacturing industry and the Maryborough region.”
