Nyrstar Australia has presented its Economic Value Report Summary for 2022, valuing the previous calendar year’s benefit to the Australian economy at $1.7 billion.

Dale Webb, Co-CEO of Nyrstar, stated that the report demonstrates the substantial value Nyrstar creates in Australia each year.

According to him, the metals the company process in Australia are vital to the manufacturing of products that the world requires, particularly during the energy transition.

“But our value goes beyond the metals we produce and refine – it extends to the economies and communities we are part of,” he noted.

Official figures of the 2022 Economic Value Report show that the value was $1.7 billion in Australia, supporting about 6,400 full-time equivalent employment, Webb added.

“The value we create for the communities where we operate is a significant priority for Nyrstar too, and in 2022 we helped support 27 community organisations in South Australia and Tasmania,” the Nyrstar official noted.

In particular, the direct spending of Nyrstar in Australia contributed $838 million to the entire economic impact of $1.7 billion while $670 million was spent with nearly 1,200 local businesses.

According to Webb, the value provided by Nyrstar’s interconnected Australian sites has been a significant contributor to the nation and the world for over a century.

“Our Port Pirie and Hobart Operations have had a significant role to play in Nyrstar refining the metals and products needed for everyday use throughout the world for generations, and we are looking forward to the exciting years ahead,” he said.
