Transit Systems has welcomed the New South Wales Government’s announcement of 151 new battery electric buses, describing it as a major milestone in the state’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable public transport network.

According to Transit Systems, Australia’s integrated multi-modal transport operator, the investment represents another decisive step in advancing the state’s zero-emission future while supporting local manufacturing and skilled jobs.

The order increases the total number of new buses purchased since the March 2023 election to 921, as revealed in a news release.

Transit Systems confirmed that the new electric buses will be manufactured by Australian companies, including Custom Denning and Volgren Australia, surpassing the State Government’s 50 per cent local manufacturing target.

The company said the collaboration underscores the strength of Australia’s domestic manufacturing capability and its contribution to sustainable transport innovation.

The buses will be rolled out progressively across Transit Systems’ Leichhardt and Kingsgrove depots, both undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades to support the growing electric fleet.

By 2028, Transit Systems expects approximately 1,700 electric buses to be operating on Sydney’s roads, delivering environmental benefits and enhanced passenger experiences.

Rino Matarazzo, managing director of Transit Systems NSW, said the announcement highlights the shared commitment between government and industry to building a cleaner, smarter transport system.

“The scale of this order demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to a sustainable transport future, while also supporting local jobs and Australian manufacturing,” Matarazzo said.

“For customers, it means more of the smooth, quiet and comfortable journeys they have already begun to experience on our existing electric fleet. For the community, it means cleaner air and significant progress in reducing emissions from public transport. Transit Systems is proud to be at the forefront of this transformation,” he said.
