Australians have increased access to safe battery recycling, according to new data released by the Battery Stewardship Council through B-cycle’s latest Positive Charge Report, which outlines the current reach and performance of the national voluntary battery stewardship scheme.

Australia’s battery manufacturing and recycling sectors have urged the NSW Government to activate the Product Lifecycle Responsibility Regulation 2025 (Batteries) before the end of the year, with the Battery Stewardship Council warning that delays are increasing safety risks across homes, workplaces and waste facilities.

The Battery Stewardship Council (BSC) has welcomed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) decision to reauthorise the national Battery Stewardship Scheme, B-cycle, for another five years. 

Australia’s official battery recycling scheme, B-cycle, has reported progress in its second year of operation, collecting 2,935 tonnes of used batteries in 2024, marking a 24 per cent increase from the previous year. 

Australian supermarket giant Coles has joined the country’s official government-backed battery recycling scheme B-cycle, adding nearly 850 battery recycling drop-off points across the country.
