The Australian Government has opened an approach to market seeking an administrator to deliver a National Solar Panel Recycling Pilot, as part of efforts to manage the growing number of solar panels reaching the end of their operational life.

According to the government, Australia has installed millions of rooftop solar panels, many of which are expected to be decommissioned in the coming years. Without intervention, a significant number could be sent to landfill.

The government has committed $24.7 million over three years to fund the pilot program. The initiative is intended to inform the development of a future national recycling and product stewardship scheme for solar panels.

Under the pilot, around 100 collection sites are expected to be established nationwide. The program will test practical methods for collecting, transporting and recycling end-of-life panels, with a target of processing up to 250,000 units from households, businesses and solar farms.

The pilot will also examine logistical and economic challenges, including the cost of transporting panels, particularly in regional and remote areas.

The approach to market is currently open through AusTender and is scheduled to close at 5pm AEST on Friday, 24 April 2026.

The government said the pilot is expected to contribute to waste reduction and support the recovery of materials such as copper and aluminium, while also contributing to broader clean energy and circular economy objectives.

An industry briefing is scheduled for 1:00 pm AEST on Thursday, 9 April 2026. Interested participants are required to register via email by 5pm AEST on Tuesday, 7 April 2026 to receive an invitation.
