The Western Australian Government has launched a new initiative aimed at helping the state’s food and beverage manufacturing sector reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency.

The Energy Snapshot study, delivered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, will include a voluntary survey of businesses across WA to map annual emissions and identify opportunities to cut carbon output while supporting the State’s target of net zero emissions by 2050.

Participating businesses will receive a confidential emissions benchmark report, with a limited number able to access more comprehensive reports including professional advice, valued at several thousand dollars in the commercial marketplace.

Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis said the program would provide WA manufacturers with practical tools to manage emissions while maintaining competitiveness.

“With customers and regulators in Australia and around the globe increasingly demanding emissions data, it is important for WA agrifood and beverage suppliers to know and understand their carbon footprint,” Jarvis said.

“No matter where your business sits on the emissions journey, all WA food and beverage manufacturers are invited to participate and benefit from this free initiative.”

The study will also support broader economic growth, sector-wide innovation, and resilience by informing policy and program development, promoting investment in green technology, and helping WA businesses remain preferred suppliers in competitive national and international markets.

Jarvis added, “This initiative supports the Sectoral Emissions Reduction Strategy for WA to provide robust, credible and cost-effective pathways and priority actions for WA’s transition to net zero emissions. The Cook Government continues to drive a range of strategies to protect our environment and long-term prosperity, as we continue to work with industry towards transitioning our economy to net zero emissions.”

Businesses interested in participating can register for an emissions report or the survey via the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development website.
