The South Australian Government’s newly announced Gas Initiative grants have been welcomed by Australian Energy Producers as an important measure to support investment in new gas supply and infrastructure across the state.

Australian Energy Producers South Australia Director David Slama said the initiative demonstrated recognition of gas as a critical component of the state’s energy mix and would help attract much-needed investment.

“The SA Gas Initiative is an important step towards ensuring our state has reliable and affordable gas supply that is essential for keeping the lights on and powering homes, businesses and industry,” Slama said.

He added that driving more investment in new gas projects would contribute to South Australia’s long-term economic growth, job creation, and energy security.

Slama said the South Australian Government’s approach to energy policy acknowledged the need for continued support for gas exploration and development alongside renewable energy.

“South Australia has one of the highest shares of variable renewables in the world, which is made possible by gas-fired generation providing reliable electricity to keep the lights on,” he said.

“By planning for future gas supply and recognising its enduring role in the energy system, South Australia is ensuring our state has reliable and affordable energy into the future.”

According to Australian Energy Producers, the announcement builds on South Australia’s efforts to encourage gas exploration and development through regular acreage releases, pre-competitive geoscience programs, and the Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism.
