Australian construction and engineering company Decmil has won an $88.7 million contract by Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) for the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade Work Package 1.

Under the contract, the company will construct two new two-lane carriageway, reconstruct and upgrade the existing carriageway, upgrade two signalised intersections and construct two new signalised intersections.

In addition, Decmil will construct a new four-lane bridge over Waurn Ponds Creek, and a cantilever structure for provision of shared use path adjacent to wetlands.

“Securing this significant contract is further validation of our strategy to target the burgeoning government spend on infrastructure projects,” said Decmil CEO Dickie Dique in an ASX Announcement.

“Our relationship with the Victorian Government continues to go from strength to strength, which is a testament to our ability to successfully deliver major projects. This is particularly evident in the Geelong region, where the Barwon Heads project is located, as over the past 5 years we have successfully completed numerous projects, most notably the Drysdale Bypass and Princess Highway Section 3.”

Decmil is part of the trio of construction partners entrusted with the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade which is set to provide multiple opportunities across the construction industry and create around 500 local jobs and about 1,400 indirect jobs. The other two partners are BMD Constructions and BildGroup.

“Projects like this are vital to our local economic recovery – it’s not only delivering a vital project, but creates much needed local jobs and gets shovels in the ground as quickly as possible,” said Victorian Member for South Barwon Darren Cheeseman.

According to the announcement, work will start immediately and is set to be completed in 2023.
