The Australian Government has announced a national initiative to provide one million Australians with free AI skills training, saying the program will help workers and small businesses prepare for the increasing use of artificial intelligence across workplaces.

In a joint statement, the government said the fully subsidised online microskill course will be delivered through the National AI Centre (NAIC) in partnership with TAFE NSW’s Institute of Applied Technology – Digital.

The course is based on the Government’s Guidance for AI Adoption released in October and builds on last year’s introductory AI program.

According to the Government, the updated course incorporates responsible AI principles and is designed to help participants understand how to apply the technology ethically and effectively.

It forms part of the National AI Plan, which aims to ensure the opportunities created by AI are accessible to all Australians, including First Nations people, women, people with disability, and regional communities.

Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Tim Ayres said the initiative is intended to broaden access to digital capability.

“Just as the internet transformed the way Australians live and work, AI is reshaping how businesses operate and how people work – and we want every Australian to share in those benefits,” Ayres said.

“This partnership between TAFE NSW’s Institute of Applied Technology – Digital and the National AI Centre opens the door for all Aussies to upskill and build confidence in using AI.”

Ayres added that the program complements broader Government measures, including the launch of the National AI Plan and the establishment of the Australian AI Safety Institute.

“We’re making sure that anyone who wants to use AI can do so safely, responsibly and effectively – no matter where they live or what industry they’re in,” he said.

Acting Minister for Skills and Training Amanda Rishworth said access to AI education is becoming essential.

“The Albanese Government wants to ensure that every Australian can get the skills they want for the jobs we need, and in today’s world, this includes access to digital and AI skills as foundation skills,” Rishworth said. She noted that TAFE is well positioned to deliver the microskill course.

“Whether you’re new to the world of AI, or looking to upskill to complement your existing work, this course will equip you with the principles and skills to use AI in your workplace.”

Further details about the fully subsidised course are available through TAFE NSW.
