Australia’s first accredited training program to service hydrogen vehicles has commenced in Victoria, supported by the state government through its Skills Solutions Partnerships program.

The program, co-designed by Kangan Institute and Foton Mobility Distribution, aims to equip automotive technicians with the skills needed to service and maintain hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.

These vehicles use hydrogen fuel to power an electric motor and are regarded as a potential solution to decarbonise Australia’s long-haul freight sector.

The Victorian Government said the initiative reflects its commitment to preparing the workforce for zero-emission technologies while supporting the state’s leadership in renewable hydrogen infrastructure.

Victoria currently operates three renewable hydrogen refuelling stations, including the only public station in Australia.

The government said this infrastructure places the state at the forefront of the nation’s transition to hydrogen-powered transport.

The training program is being delivered under the Skills Solutions Partnerships model, which brings together industry, TAFEs and dual-sector universities to address skills gaps in priority sectors.

Through this approach, the state government said new short courses and on-the-job training opportunities can be developed in line with emerging industry needs.

As part of its Economic Growth Statement, the Victorian Government has allocated $4.75 million to extend the Skills Solutions Partnerships Program.

Expressions of interest for the program’s second round have recently closed, with successful projects expected to be announced in the coming months.
