Victorian home builder JG King Homes has announced a major manufacturing milestone, committing to deliver 8 Star energy-efficient homes across all its standard designs at no extra cost to customers.

In a media release, the company said the initiative underscores its leadership in sustainable housing and efficient building manufacturing, with each home expected to use up to 30 per cent less energy compared to a 7 Star home.

JG King Building Group Executive Director John King Jr said the company’s decision represents a significant step toward accessible sustainability for families.

“Our new homes will deliver lower energy bills and higher energy efficiency performance without requiring homebuyers to overextend their borrowing or compromise their aspirations on design and comfort,” Mr King said.

He added that JG King Homes’ 8 Star standard will allow families to benefit from the dual advantage of affordability and environmental responsibility.

“Families choosing a standard JG King Homes 8 Star home will consume up to 30 per cent less energy and enjoy significant savings on their annual energy bills compared to a 7 Star home,” he said.

“This saving will make a real difference to family budgets at the same time as being environmentally responsible.”

King said the company’s shift to higher efficiency standards was also supported by emerging financial incentives.

“An increasing number of Australian lenders are offering discounted interest rates on loans for high-performing energy efficient homes,” he said. “This could translate into even greater savings for our future 8 Star home customers.”

The company said it was able to achieve these standards thanks in part to its Perfect Windows and Doors factory in Ballarat, which it described as “critical” to the manufacturing success of its energy-efficient homes.

The facility, which produces high-performance uPVC windows and doors, incorporates low-E glazing and double or triple-glazed windows designed to maximise insulation and thermal efficiency, according to JG King Homes.

“Our highly efficient Perfect Windows and Doors factory located in Ballarat, Victoria has been critical to our success,” King said. “All JG King Homes windows and doors are made using uPVC, ensuring our products enjoy high thermal efficiency and insulation properties without compromising size, number, or design.”

The company said it has invested heavily in research and development to achieve 8 Star performance within existing pricing structures.

It highlighted a series of key innovations, including increased insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors, tightly sealed building envelopes, and the addition of roof blankets to enhance thermal performance.

According to JG King Homes, this latest step builds on its earlier move in December 2023 to introduce 7 Star homes five months ahead of the mandatory industry standard, reinforcing its commitment to staying ahead of national energy efficiency benchmarks.

“Our decision to commit early to an 8 Star standard highlights JG King Homes’ seriousness about climate change and environmentally sustainable practices,” King said.
