Manufacturers in the Hunter region continue to play a key role in supporting economic growth, national supply chains and workforce development, according to the organisers of the 2025 Hunter Manufacturing Awards (HMA).
Now in its 21st year, the HMA recognises the achievements of businesses operating across one of Australia’s most strategically significant industrial corridors, spanning from the Port of Newcastle to Newcastle Airport and the Williamtown RAAF base.
“Our manufacturers are competing and excelling on the global stage,” said Jacqui Daley, Chair of the Hunter Manufacturing Awards.
“These businesses aren’t just contributing to our economy, they’re safeguarding national defence, advancing sustainability, and investing in the next generation of skilled workers.”
Highlighting the strength of the region, three of the 2024 award winners are based in Tomago. TW Woods, which received the Rising Star Award, has grown into one of the largest steel fabrication companies on the east coast.
Infection control specialist Whiteley earned top honours in the export and global supply chain category, while WesTrac was recognised for its commitment to workforce development, home to the 2024 Apprentice of the Year.
“The region’s manufacturing strength is on display in this precinct,” said Daley. “These award winners reflect the diversity, innovation and capability that define manufacturing in the Hunter.”
In 2025, the HMA will introduce two new award categories, including Diversity in Manufacturing, which aims to recognise inclusive practices in the sector.
A notable example is Downer’s partnership with Aruma, a major NDIS disability service provider. Through the collaboration, Aruma’s Supported Employees are supplying critical electrical components, such as preformed cables and terminal mounting strips, for Downer’s infrastructure and utility projects.
Liam Parker, Manufacturing Manager at Downer, said the initiative demonstrates the potential of inclusive manufacturing to deliver both business and social outcomes. “We’re proud to play a leading role in making things in the Hunter,” Parker said.
“Partnering with organisations like Aruma proves that smart, inclusive manufacturing benefits both business and community and it’s how we’ll build a stronger region.”
Another key development in 2025 is a new partnership with Industry Update, which will see HMA winners automatically fast-tracked into the national Australian Manufacturing Awards.
“The 2025 HMA is about celebrating the people and businesses who are redefining what’s possible in regional manufacturing,” said Daley. “From small family operations to large-scale exporters, the Hunter continues to lead the way.”
The Hunter Manufacturing Awards aim to inspire and encourage a vibrant and enduring manufacturing sector through streamlined, future-focused categories and new pathways for education, collaboration and growth.
