UNSW Sydney has launched a new international fellowship initiative aimed at attracting leading global researchers to collaborate on solutions to major societal challenges.
The Green Fellowship program, named after solar technology pioneer Scientia Professor Martin Green, will offer up to 12 fellowships to distinguished academics whose work aligns with the University’s strategic priorities.
The initiative is designed to strengthen UNSW’s global research partnerships and contribute to advancing knowledge in areas critical to the future, including sustainability, health, social resilience, and economic prosperity.
Selected fellows will join UNSW for a minimum of 12 months, with the option to extend to two years and potential for a permanent appointment.
UNSW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Attila Brungs said the Green Fellowship initiative underscores the university’s commitment to impactful, collaborative research.
“At UNSW, we’re deeply committed to driving positive societal change through world-leading research and global collaboration,” Professor Brungs said.
“The Green Fellowship program embodies this mission, and we welcome the opportunity to partner with the world’s most exceptional international researchers whose work aligns with UNSW’s priorities to improve lives, create sustainable futures and strengthen communities.”
The program is open to accomplished academics at the level of Senior Research Fellow, Associate Professor, or Professor (equivalent to Levels C/D/E in Australia) whose research aligns with at least one of UNSW’s four Impact Focus Areas: accelerating the transition to a sustainable society and planet, advancing economic and social prosperity, enabling healthy lives, and strengthening societal resilience, security and cohesion.
Fellows will be hosted by a UNSW School or research centre and fully integrated into the academic community, with UNSW covering salary and relocation costs.
UNSW Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research & Enterprise, Professor Bronwyn Fox, said the fellowships build on the university’s strong history of international engagement.
“We are fortunate to have world-class researchers from across the globe working here at UNSW, and the Green Fellowship program will further strengthen those global ties,” Professor Fox said.
“We welcome academics who approach their work with courage, rigour and purpose, and who are driven to make a real and lasting impact on society.”
Professor Martin Green, whose name the program honours, said he was humbled by the recognition and optimistic about the collaboration it would foster.
“Throughout my career I’ve had the privilege of working alongside brilliant minds from Australia and around the world,” Professor Green said.
“It’s this kind of deep collaboration, drawing on diverse perspectives and experiences, that enabled my team and myself to pioneer new pathways in solar and green energy. I see that same potential in the Green Fellowships, and I’m excited to see the meaningful and impactful outcomes of this global collaboration.”
