Sydney is set to host the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) from 29 September to 3 October 2025, transforming the city into a hub for space science, culture, and public engagement through IAC 2025 Space Week.

Organised by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and supported by the Space Industry Association of Australia, the Australian Space Agency, and the NSW Government, the event will draw up to 10,000 astronauts, scientists, engineers, and space industry leaders from over 80 countries to the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour.

Running alongside the congress, IAC 2025 Space Week will offer the public free access to city-wide events and experiences designed to bring space exploration closer to Earth.

Highlights include astronaut meet-and-greets, a 10-metre inflatable astronaut in Martin Place, deep space message recordings at the Powerhouse Museum, live demonstrations by scientists and engineers, and pop-up exhibitions across Sydney.

On Friday, 3 October, IAC 2025 Space Day – Powered By LEGO Play – will offer interactive activities for all ages, from operating mini lunar rovers to sending portraits to the Moon. The event will feature workshops, mission patch competitions, and a LEGO build zone.

Australian astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg, from the Australian Space Agency, said she is eager to engage the public during the week. “I’m pumped to welcome my fellow astronauts from around the world to Sydney and to meet as many people as we can as part of IAC 2025 Space Week,” she said.

“Space is exciting, it’s awe-inspiring, it’s used by every single one of us every day, and it’s happening right here in Australia. IAC 2025 Space Week is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to show how space benefits life on Earth and to excite young Australians about a future in STEM.”

The Powerhouse Museum will also integrate its 2025 Sydney Science Festival into the week’s program, hosting talks, workshops, and activations, culminating in a free science day at Parramatta Square on 4 October. Activities will include spacesuit patch making, a custom Fortnite lunar mission game, and opportunities to meet scientists and astronauts.

“We are thrilled for Sydney Science Festival 2025 to be a part of International Astronautical Congress for IAC 2025 Space Week, marking its historic debut in Sydney,” said Powerhouse Museum Chief Executive Lisa Havilah.

“This landmark global event highlights our shared commitment to celebrating science, innovation and the visionary leaders shaping our future.”
