TasTAFE has officially opened an immersive Skills Lab, offering learners virtual and augmented reality training to develop practical skills before entering a worksite, the Tasmanian Government announced.

The facility is aimed at preparing a job-ready workforce for the state’s manufacturing and related industries, the government said in a news release.

The Immersive Skills Lab combines virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies to deliver training in a safe, controlled environment.

According to the Tasmanian Government, $250,000 was invested to establish the lab in partnership with the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone (BBAMZ) and TasTAFE.

Minister for Skills and Jobs, Felix Ellis, said the government-backed initiative would transform workforce preparation in the state.

“This is next-level training—interactive, immersive and built for the real world,” Minister Ellis said. “By harnessing cutting-edge technology, we’re fast-tracking job readiness and making sure our training system keeps pace with industry.”

The Tasmanian Government highlighted the collaboration between industry and education in bringing the facility to life.

“Tasmania is open for business and TasTAFE is open to industry. By working in partnership with industry, we’ve brought this facility to life in the real and virtual world,” Minister Ellis said.

The government noted that more than $1 million has been invested across 16 projects delivering innovative training solutions for Tasmanians.

Minister Ellis added, “This Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmania, with our Tasmanian Skills Plan ensuring learners and employers are at the centre of everything we do to create more jobs and grow the economy.”

According to the Tasmanian Government, the Immersive Skills Lab is now operational and available to learners seeking technology-driven, job-ready experience in manufacturing and other sectors.
