ABB has officially opened its Traction Centre of Excellence in Maryborough, Queensland, creating a purpose-built hub for the local manufacturing of traction converters, motors, and energy storage solutions.

The facility, which held its grand opening on, represents a USD 6 million investment, according to ABB, and aims to support Australia’s rail industry and sustainable mobility initiatives.

In a news release, ABB describes the 5,000 square metre facility as the first in Australia to produce traction and auxiliary converters locally, a move ABB says will strengthen supply chains, create skilled jobs, and foster local talent.

The company confirmed the hub will support major projects including the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) in preparation for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“This monumental achievement is a testament to the power of partnership. By uniting ABB’s technology leadership with the expertise of Hyundai Rotem, Downer Rail, and the Queensland Government, we’re shaping the future of rail – delivering smarter, cleaner solutions that will drive sustainable growth and will resonate for generations,” said Dr Ali Parvizi, Local Division Manager, Traction – Australia/New Zealand, in a statement from ABB.

ABB said the facility combines advanced manufacturing capabilities, engineering expertise, and lifecycle support.

The Traction Centre of Excellence will provide testing, fault-finding, and quality assessment services, alongside a dedicated Traction Battery Service Centre for maintenance, repair, predictive maintenance, and overhauls.

ABB noted these services aim to maximise equipment uptime and support Australia’s transition to cleaner transport.

According to ABB, the Maryborough hub demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration with Australian transport operators.
