Manufacturing battery innovation in Australia is set to advance following new funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), which has announced support for two projects aimed at strengthening domestic battery manufacturing capability and supply chains.
In a news release, ARENA confirmed that more than $4 million will be allocated under its Battery Breakthrough Initiative (BBI) to support projects focused on next-generation battery technologies, including battery pack assembly and the development of advanced battery materials.
According to ARENA, the funding is intended to help build “a competitive, resilient and sustainable battery manufacturing industry in Australia” by backing innovation across the sector.
ARENA CEO Darren Miller said the selected projects reflect efforts to strengthen Australia’s position in battery manufacturing and supply chain development.
“These projects support Australian companies to progress next-generation battery materials production and advanced manufacturing of battery packs,” Miller said.
“By supporting innovative battery technologies, ARENA is helping reduce costs, cut emissions and build sovereign capability to support Australia’s clean energy transition.”
Under the announcement, PowerPlus Energy will receive $2.32 million to expand and automate parts of its battery pack assembly line in Victoria. ARENA said the upgrade is expected to increase the company’s annual production capacity from 50 MWh to 150 MWh and enable expansion into new markets.
Firebird Metals has also been awarded $2 million to develop a demonstration-scale facility in Perth that will process manganese concentrate into cathode materials used in batteries.
ARENA said the project is intended to support the use of Australia’s manganese resources and strengthen domestic processing capacity while responding to global demand for manganese-rich battery materials.
The Battery Breakthrough Initiative, which is providing the funding, is a $500 million program delivered by ARENA as part of the National Battery Strategy.
The agency noted it was developed in consultation with the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and is designed to support growth in battery manufacturing, workforce opportunities and energy storage capability in Australia.
ARENA said the program is merit-based and will remain open until funds are exhausted or otherwise extended or concluded.
