The Federal Government has reappointed Mr Darren Miller as CEO of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) for a further three years.

Making the announcement, Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Angus Taylor, said Mr Miller’s reappointment would commence on 27 August 2021 and run until 26 August 2024.

“Mr Miller has done an exceptional job leading ARENA since his appointment in 2018,” the Minister said.

“Under Mr Miller’s strong and effective leadership, ARENA has undertaken an increasingly prominent role in energy innovation including support of projects related to storage technologies, electric vehicles, distributed energy and hydrogen.

“His reappointment will ensure ARENA continues to benefit from his significant experience and expertise as it works to deliver on priorities under the Morrison Government’s Technology Investment Roadmap.”

Minister Taylor also announced the appointment of former Rio Tinto Group Executive Stephen McIntosh to the ARENA Board for a two-year term.

Mr McIntosh, who has extensive experience in green metals, wind, solar and batteries, as well as in hydrogen and carbon capture technologies, will replace outgoing board member Mr Dougal McOmish who will resign from the ARENA board when his current term expires on 17 July 2021.

Ms Stephanie Unwin, the Chief Executive of Horizon Power, has been reappointed to the Board for a further two years.

“Their appointments will ensure the Board continues to benefit from their significant experience and expertise in renewable energy, technology, commercialisation, business investment and corporate governance,” the Minister concluded.

ARENA Chair Justin Punch congratulated Darren Miller on his reappointment as ARENA CEO.

“Darren has been a forward-thinking, dedicated and passionate leader for ARENA. We are excited to have him at the helm for a further three years,” Mr Punch said.

“Having recently been renewed with $1.62 billion in funding, ARENA is starting a new era where we are focussing on the electricity sector as well as building a hydrogen industry and tackling emissions in hard-to-abate sectors.”
