South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Company and India’s TVS Motor Company have signed a partnership agreement to jointly develop and market electric three-wheelers (E3W) in India, with potential expansion to other markets.
The formal agreement follows the companies’ showcasing of the E3W concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. Three-wheelers are widely used across India for short-distance passenger transport and deliveries.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hyundai will lead the design process and contribute its research capabilities and human-centred design approach.
The electric three-wheeler will be specifically designed to meet India’s particular transportation challenges while offering sustainable solutions suitable for local roads and city infrastructure, Hyundai Motor said in its announcement.
“Hyundai Motor Company has long explored ways to contribute to improving India’s transportation environment as a key market, and our collaboration with TVS Motor is a strategic decision rooted in that effort. We hope the co-developed E3W enables broader access to safer and more sustainable transportation for people across the country,” said Joongsun Ko, senior vice president of corporate strategy and planning at Hyundai Motor Company.
TVS Motor will help develop the vehicle using its cutting-edge electric platform, extensive knowledge of three-wheeler engineering, and deep understanding of the local market.
Building on its established reputation for trust and quality, TVS will also handle sales in India. The company’s manufacturing facilities in India will produce vehicles both for the domestic market and potentially for export in the future.
Sharad Mishra, president of group strategy at TVS, said the partnership moves forward the two companies’ shared goal of creating E3W solutions.
“By bringing together complementary strengths – including our electric three-wheeler platform, engineering expertise, and deep understanding of customer needs – we are well-positioned to deliver purpose-built products for India and additional markets,” Mishra said.
He added that this teamwork strengthens TVS’s commitment to developing sustainable transportation options for last-mile mobility while aiming to set “new benchmarks in technology, quality, customer experience, and a legacy of trust.”
