The Western Australian Government is reviewing its procurement framework to identify how government spending can create more local jobs, strengthen industry and support manufacturing under its Made in WA plan.
In a news release, the Cook Labor Government said the statutory review of the Procurement Act 2020 would examine how its purchasing power could provide greater opportunities for local businesses while delivering value for taxpayers.
The review will consider how government procurement can support local jobs and businesses and maximise the economic benefits of taxpayer spending. It will also examine opportunities in areas including advanced manufacturing.
Premier Roger Cook said government purchasing could be used to support local industry while maintaining value for taxpayers.
“Government purchasing is one of the most powerful tools we have to support local jobs and grow local industry,” Cook said.
“These contracts are not just dollar figures. They are opportunities to back businesses that employ Western Australians and invest in our communities.”
The WA Government said procurement accounts for billions of dollars in annual contracts, including spending on energy, water and transport infrastructure.
Finance Minister David Michael said government procurement could help build local capability.
“Every dollar the State spends is a chance to support local businesses, build local capability and help make more things here in Western Australia,” Michael said.
The review will also seek feedback on approach-to-market procurement thresholds under the Western Australian Procurement Rules.
Michael encouraged businesses, industry groups, unions, State agencies and members of the community to provide feedback as part of the review.
“This review will help ensure our procurement system delivers value for taxpayers while supporting the Cook Labor Government’s Made in WA agenda,” he said.
Stakeholders can provide feedback through the WA Government’s public consultation on the review of the Procurement Act 2020.
