Lithium Australia has been admitted to the Global Battery Alliance (GBA), which brings together leading entities involved in the battery value chain to accelerate the deployment of batteries worldwide.

Founded in 2017 at the World Economic Forum, the GBA brings together manufacturers, governments, international development organisations, NGOs and academics to fast-track the deployment of batteries across the globe, and in so doing reduce emissions and lower barriers to a circular battery economy – including the recycling of end-of-life batteries.

Lithium Australia managing director Adrian Griffin said the GBA membership would allow the company to realise its stated aim to achieve vertical integration of lithium extraction, production of battery materials and the recycling of end-of-life batteries; in particular, spent lithium-ion batteries.

He said the company’s partly owned subsidiary Envirostream – Australia’s only mixed-battery recycler – as well as its wholly owned subsidiary VSPC, which produces advanced cathode powders, would both benefit from Lithium Australia’s membership in GBA.

“It [Envirostream] will benefit directly from the Company’s membership of the GBA through harmonisation of transboundary regulations and access to experts and major industry participants in battery recycling globally,” Mr Griffin stated.

“Acceleration of the use of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage creates a global challenge in terms of both the supply of battery materials and recycling of the batteries when spent.

“VSPC Ltd, a 100% Company owned subsidiary, is a producer of advanced cathode powders for lithium-ion batteries. As such, it too will benefit from the efforts of the GBA and its members in this area.”
