Manufacturing order sees AML3D supply 3D-printed components for US Navy submarines

Australian advanced manufacturing company AML3D has received an initial production parts order valued at approximately AU$0.5 million to supply components for US Navy nuclear submarines.

According to AML3D, the order from Austal USA Advanced Technologies covers three large, high-pressure copper-nickel (CuNi) fluid control components, which will be produced using its Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAM) technology.

The order follows a CuNi qualification and testing program undertaken by AML3D in support of the US Navy’s submarine industrial base (SIB), moving production of the components from traditional manufacturing methods to additive manufacturing.

The company said the components will be metal 3D printed at its US headquarters and technology centre in Stow, Ohio. Production parts are expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of FY27, with payment structured as 50 per cent upfront and the balance due following delivery, testing and commissioning.

AML3D CEO Sean Ebert said the company was “excited to deliver parts that directly support the US Navy nuclear submarine programs”.

“AML3D has been diligently delivering component and materials qualification and test programs for the US Navy over several years,” Ebert said.

“We have always known that our WAM® technology produced parts that match and regularly exceed traditional manufacturing. We view this order for production parts from Austal USA as a strong endorsement of our WAM® technology.”

AML3D said component manufacturing is one of the initial drivers of its US scale-up strategy, alongside sales of its ARCEMY advanced manufacturing systems. The company said 17 ARCEMY systems have been deployed in the US to date, including 16 supporting the US Navy SIB.

AML3D also cited US Navy forecasts indicating demand for up to 100 advanced additive manufacturing systems and 1,600 additively manufactured components by 2030.

“Demand for ARCEMY® in the US is continuing to grow and now, of equal importance, demand for component manufacturing is also growing,” Ebert said.
