
A $13.2 million research project led by the University of Melbourne will investigate technologies aimed at improving the efficiency and durability of silicon solar modules, with potential applications in solar manufacturing.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) said it is providing $4.8 million towards the project, which will develop and test spectral management technologies designed to make greater use of sunlight while managing heat and ultraviolet exposure in solar modules.
The project, titled Spectral utilisation for next-gen silicon, is being conducted in partnership with Monash University, Adelaide University, the University of New South Wales, Jinko Solar, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and the University of Bayreuth.
According to ARENA, silicon solar modules need to become more efficient, durable and cost-effective to support lower-cost solar power. The agency said some sunlight is not currently used as effectively as it could be, while heat and ultraviolet exposure can affect module performance over time.
The research will focus on technologies including UV/blue conversion layers and infrared management coatings. These technologies will be integrated into prototype solar modules, with their performance assessed through modelling and reliability testing.
ARENA said the project will also use techno-economic analysis to identify the technologies considered most promising. If the initial stage is successful, selected technologies will be scaled and demonstrated with industry partners.
The project aims to demonstrate technologies that can improve silicon module efficiency, reduce operating temperatures and improve stability.
ARENA said at least one technology is expected to be advanced towards commercial readiness, with larger prototype modules and supporting evidence intended to inform potential pilot manufacturing and field testing.
If successful, the technologies could increase solar energy yield, extend module life and reduce the levelised cost of electricity, according to ARENA. These outcomes remain dependent on the results of the research, testing and subsequent development work.
The agency also said the project is expected to strengthen Australian expertise in next-generation silicon solar modules and establish closer links between researchers and manufacturers.
The project is being funded under ARENA’s Ultra Low-Cost Solar PV R&D Funding Round and is scheduled to run from August 11, 2026, to December 5, 2031.
ARENA said the project will also contribute to knowledge sharing around spectral technologies, durability testing and potential commercial pathways for lower-cost solar photovoltaic technology.
