The Australian Government has launched new digital tools designed to improve visibility and support growth in the nation’s rail manufacturing sector, announcing the release of an expanded Rolling Stock Capability Index and updates to the National Rolling Stock Procurement Pipeline.

In a news release, the government said the enhanced Rolling Stock Capability Index is intended to strengthen Australia’s rail manufacturing landscape by mapping businesses that manufacture, refurbish or supply components for the rolling stock industry.

“The index will help increase visibility of the national rolling stock manufacturing supply chain,” the government stated, noting that stakeholders can use the data to identify opportunities for growth and collaboration across the sector.

According to the announcement, the interactive index includes an online map, graphs and a searchable data table that can be filtered by product, location and service type.

It contains data on 32 components used in heavy and light rail, with users able to access information on company size, location, contact details and product types, including bogies, couplers, braking systems and glass.

The Industry Capability Network compiled the data on behalf of the Office of National Rail Industry Coordination (ONRIC), which said it will continue to update and refine the index to reflect new and evolving industry capabilities.

The Australian Government also confirmed significant updates to the National Rolling Stock Procurement Pipeline, citing a recent review and user feedback.

The revised pipeline now includes new procurement and rolling stock projection data, clearer visual presentation and additional context to improve user understanding.

Officials said the improvements aim to support a more cost-effective and competitive manufacturing environment.

The government noted both initiatives form part of the National Rail Procurement and Manufacturing Strategy, with ONRIC stating it will continue to update the tools as part of its broader role in building capability across the rail manufacturing sector.
