Australian chipmaker Archer Materials Limited has received the Hong Kong patent for its 12CQ quantum computing chip technology— a significant early-stage milestone in the development of the company’s proprietary qubit semiconductor.

The patent provides protection to the proposed qubit processor chip, which offers a path to realise practical quantum computing, according to a media statement issued by Archer Friday.

Additionally, the Hong Kong patent also provides Archer with exclusive and legally enforceable commercial rights to the 12CQ chip invention in the administrative region.

Mohammad Choucair, CEO of Archer, said in the statement that the patent granting procedure related to the 12CQ chip technology has been “an outstanding success.”

The Hong Kong commercial rights add to the protection from the patent systems of Europe, the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, and Australia— grants announced by Archer months prior.

The grant of the semiconductor patent provides Archer with the right to stop others from manufacturing, using, and/or selling the 12CQ chip technology invention. It is also a requirement for any possible future commercialisation operations in the respective granting jurisdiction.

“Archer is one of few companies with granted patents protecting quantum computing chip technology and one with a unique global competitive advantage,” Choucair said.
