Authentise releases ChatGPT-powered 3D printing database

Authentise, a workflow software business specialising in engineering and manufacturing solutions, has launched 3DGPT, a comprehensive database of additive manufacturing (AM) knowledge that uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform and is free to the public.

The company, which has locations in Philadelphia and London, was awarded funding from the UK government’s InnovateUK fund to create 3DGPT as part of the project’s Scalable AM Rule Creation & Dissemination (SAMRCD) initiative.

The database was created using more than 12,000 academic articles and standards linked to the AM industry, the company claims, Authentise revealed in a news release.

The grant’s abstract highlights the potential of 3DGPT to advance understanding regarding the carbon footprint of metal additive manufacturing, particularly when compared to other production technologies like CNC machining.

The abstract reads,  “The development of the tools proposed…would make a profound impact in energy reduction and accelerate [AM] as a viable sustainable production process as part of the UK’s manufacturing capabilities.”

On the project, Authentise teamed with research centres and organisations that set standards, like ASTM International and The Welding Institute (TWI) of the UK.

Andre Wegner, the CEO of Authentise, said, Authentise has always prioritised incorporating the greatest algorithms into its process, and that the team is excited to be the first to teach Large Language Models with decades of incremental knowledge.

Wegner explained, “There are many ways we think that this tool might be useful inside our product portfolio — whether it’s to help create reliable and efficient workflows or make RFQ’s with many standards references more penetrable. Before that — we, Authentise as well as partners such as ASTM, naturally need to understand the technology’s opportunities and limits; we know that ChatGPT algorithms sometimes hallucinate, for instance.”

Innovate UK supported the development of 3DGPT through SAMRCD.

The system is open for public trials at www.authentise.com/3dgpt now.

Interested individuals may visit Authentise at the Smart Factory Expo, part of Manufacturing + Engineering week in Birmingham, UK, held in conjunction with TCT360 from 7 to 8 June at Booth IA34; Innovation Alley.
