South Australia-headquartered packaging solutions company Detpak has launched Vanguard, the first broad range of compostable sugarcane plates, bowls, and containers with No-Added PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

The Vanguard range, developed by Eco-Products, employs a proprietary formulation that achieves grease resistance without relying on the addition of PFAS, the company said in a press release.

PFAS, known for its persistence and potential toxicity, has raised global environmental and health concerns.

Detpak’s move to eliminate added PFAS from its products and materials reflects a commitment to sustainability and aligns with evolving understanding of the potential human health effects of PFAS exposure.

Detpak Product and Brand General Manager Keith Bishop emphasised the company’s dedication to phasing out PFAS.

“We are working with our customer base on phasing out PFAS from their products and materials, and the introduction of the Vanguard range is a key milestone of our strategy in phasing out added PFAS from our entire product range,” Bishop noted.

In particular, the Vanguard range is made from renewable moulded sugarcane fibre, offering compostable packaging that supports a circular economy.

Detpak’s exclusive launch of the Vanguard range in Australia demonstrates the company’s proactive approach to addressing environmental concerns and staying ahead of the curve in the movement away from chemicals of concern.

The move is also aligned with Detpak’s global sustainability targets, which include increasing the percentage of products meeting or exceeding APCO’s Sustainable Packaging Guidelines.

APCO (Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation) CEO Chris Foley highlighted the significance of eliminating PFAS from packaging, stating, “The support of APCO’s industry members, including Detpak, is crucial to the success of this work and to the goal of eliminating PFAS in packaging in Australia.”

Detpak’s Vanguard compostable packaging range is now available in the market throughout Australia.
