IperionX said it has received a USD 0.3 million prototype purchase order from American Rheinmetall to support the manufacturing of lightweight titanium components for US Army heavy ground combat systems.
In a media release, IperionX said the order covers the production of 700 titanium components, which will be manufactured in the United States using 100 per cent recycled titanium feedstock through the company’s Hydrogen Assisted Metallothermic Reduction (HAMR) and Hydrogen Sintering and Phase Transformation (HSPT) technologies.
The ASX-listed company said the initial purchase order has the potential to lead to a significantly larger agreement, subject to the successful delivery of the current scope of work.
According to IperionX, the titanium components are intended to replace steel parts and are expected to deliver a weight reduction of approximately 40 to 45 per cent per component, which the company said could translate into a reduction of several hundred kilograms per vehicle depending on final configuration.
IperionX said lightweighting is becoming an increasingly important consideration in the manufacturing of US Army heavy ground combat platforms, as vehicles continue to gain mass due to survivability and lethality upgrades, including enhanced armour systems and emerging counter-drone technologies.
The company said potential benefits of using titanium components include improved vehicle performance through reduced weight, increased operational range, enhanced survivability, and reduced ground pressure, which may improve traction and mobility on soft or uneven terrain.
IperionX said the prototype purchase order supports US Government priorities to reshore critical materials supply chains, reduce reliance on foreign titanium sources, and expand domestic manufacturing capacity using recycled feedstocks.
IperionX chief executive officer Taso Arima said the order demonstrated the application of the company’s manufacturing technologies in a defence setting.
“This purchase order demonstrates the practical application of IperionX’s recycled titanium technologies on important U.S. ground combat platforms,” Arima said.
“As the only domestic producer of commercial primary titanium, IperionX is uniquely positioned to support domestic defence priorities with secure, low-carbon, and cost-competitive titanium products manufactured entirely in the United States.”
