Manufacturing transformation is accelerating as 2026 begins, with sustainability, digitalisation and skills development reshaping global industry priorities, according to cutting tools and manufacturing solutions provider Sandvik Coromant.

The company says the sector is navigating rapid change driven by technology adoption, cost pressures and workforce challenges, while also seeing new opportunities across advanced production.

Helen Blomqvist, President of Sandvik Coromant, said the company’s strategy is grounded in its long-standing industry role while adapting to future demands.

“We build the future on the foundation of our heritage,” Blomqvist said. “Even with a strong brand and a proud history, we cannot rest on that; we need to perform for growth and efficiency today while transforming our capabilities to remain the undisputed market leader tomorrow.”

She added that building a learning-focused culture is central to how the company approaches change, highlighting psychological safety, curiosity and customer-focused teams as key enablers of innovation.

Industry shift driven by technology and pressure points

Sandvik Coromant noted that manufacturing is undergoing a significant technological shift, with companies at different stages of digital adoption. The company said sustainability pressures, rising input costs and skills shortages are among the most influential forces shaping decision-making across the sector.

The aerospace sector, in particular, is expected to see continued demand growth, supported by fleet modernisation and increased production needs. Industry forecasts, including Deloitte’s 2026 Aerospace and Defense Industry Outlook, point to strengthening aircraft production cycles and sustained demand for advanced materials and precision components.

AI moves from experimentation to core operations

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly embedded in industrial operations. Sandvik Coromant said AI is moving from pilot projects to broader use across production, supply chain management and quality control.

The company pointed to external data from Xometry’s Manufacturing Outlook 2026, which found that 82% of executives view AI as a core growth driver, with many reporting early returns on investment.

“AI has moved beyond the hype to become a business-critical tool for manufacturing,” the company said, adding that future systems are expected to optimise production in real time and support predictive maintenance and efficiency improvements.

Sustainability and circular manufacturing initiatives

Sustainability remains a key focus area, with Sandvik Coromant highlighting rising raw material costs and increased pressure to reduce environmental impact. The company referenced remarks by António Guterres at the COP30 climate conference, who said: “We can choose to lead – or be led to ruin,” urging faster action on climate commitments.

In response, Sandvik Coromant pointed to initiatives including its buyback programme for used carbide tools, designed to support circular production and reduce reliance on virgin raw materials. It also highlighted its Sustainability Analyzer, launched in 2025, which provides emissions data linked to machining solutions.

The company said such tools are intended to make circularity and emissions reduction more practical within day-to-day manufacturing operations.

Outlook for 2026 manufacturing

Looking ahead to 2026, Sandvik Coromant said sustainability is expected to become more data-driven and integrated into manufacturing workflows, with customers increasingly demanding measurable carbon performance alongside cost and efficiency metrics.

“Customers are already beginning to expect more than simply the products they are purchasing,” Blomqvist said. “They seek value-creating solutions delivered through strategic partnerships, digital-first innovation and a shared commitment to sustainable manufacturing.”

The company said it aims to support this shift by combining industrial performance with long-term transformation, positioning itself as a partner to manufacturers navigating ongoing global change.
