Kinaltek, an Australian developer of next-generation technology for the synthesis and processing of inorganic materials, has partnered with UPL Specialty Chemicals to help develop catalyst production in India.

As part of a memorandum of understanding, Kinaltek will equip UPL with a low-cost, one-step process to rapidly produce nickel-based alloys needed for making nickel catalysts for large-scale manufacturers and users worldwide.

Kinaltek’s proprietary integrated process is capable of converting low-cost metallic precursor powders into high-quality products without the need for specialist materials or costly processes frequently used by other companies.

According to an ASX update, Kinaltek’s process is also “tuneable,” which allows for the manufacturing of product compositions that can be tailored for specific customers. It also uses an exothermic method that enables cost cutting and significantly reduces environmental impact.

Current catalyst production practices involve multiple steps and a number of intensive energy phases that begin with producing nickel and aluminium, followed by co-melting, quenching and crushing to obtain alloys suitable for catalyst production.

The partnership, which will integrate Kinaltek’s innovative process and UPL’s understanding of process engineering and manufacturing expertise, is expected to yield a significant improvement in catalyst cost benefit.

“We are excited to join forces with UPL to develop the technology and we look forward for a productive and fruitful relationship with them,” said Jawad Haidar, the founder and chief executive of Kinaltek.

UPL is a global manufacturer and supplier of specialty chemicals. The company develops technologies and production practices aimed at achieving low-cost and high-quality products for customers, all while minimising environmental impact and energy use.
