Operators in the recycling and processing industries in Western Australia are eligible to apply for a share of a $1 million fund to encourage investments in infrastructure projects, the government announced.

The WasteSorted Infrastructure Grants Program is now accepting applications, and each project may receive up to $250,000.

In particular, the initiative prioritises projects that recycle and process food and garden organics, as well as textiles.

Environment Minister Reece Whitby urges recycling infrastructure providers to apply for this funding, which will improve Western Australia’s ability to process and recycle valuable waste.

“Our Government is continuing to invest to increase WA’s recycling infrastructure, and ultimately improve environmental management,” Minister Whitby said.

“We’re committed to making landfill the last resort, and this grants program is another important step towards creating a low-waste, sustainable state,” the minister noted.

The WasteSorted Infrastructure Grants program is a Western Australian government initiative managed by the Waste Authority and funded by the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account.

The funding program’s goal is to encourage investment in recycling and processing facilities in the state.

Infrastructure projects that assist the recovery and reprocessing of target materials prioritised for the 2023-24 funding round will be given priority.

Businesses with at least one year of continuous operation, incorporated community groups, local governments, not-for-profit organisations, including charitable recycling organisations and regional councils may apply for the said funding.

The WasteSorted Infrastructure Grants are consistent with the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 (waste strategy) goals of reducing waste, recovering more value and resources from solid waste, and safeguarding the environment.
