Austal Limited has announced that its Australasia division has secured a contract valued between AUD 14 million and AUD 16 million to build a 36-metre catamaran for Cruise Whitsundays, part of experiential tourism group Journey Beyond.

The vessel, designed by Incat Crowther, will be constructed at Austal Vietnam’s shipyard in Vung Tau and is expected to be delivered in December 2026, Austal said in a media release.

According to the ASX-listed company, the aluminium catamaran will accommodate 390 passengers and 10 crew members, operating scheduled services from Airlie Beach to Daydream and Hamilton Islands in Queensland’s Whitsundays region.

Austal Limited Chief Executive Officer Paddy Gregg said the new contract followed a competitive tender process and reinforced the company’s standing in the international ferry market.

“This new commercial contract highlights the capability of Austal’s commercial shipyards and effective collaboration with both customers and industry partners,” Gregg said.

“We’re delighted Cruise Whitsundays has selected Austal to deliver this important new vessel for their fleet, offering an exceptional experience for their passengers and crew.”

He noted that Austal Vietnam, which recently advanced work on a 71-metre steel monohull ferry for the Degage Group in French Polynesia, was prepared to begin construction on the new project.

“The Austal team in Vung Tau has quickly established a reputation for quality, safety, efficiency and innovation and look forward to collaborating with both Incat Crowther and Cruise Whitsundays on the delivery of this vessel,” Gregg said.

He added his appreciation to the client, stating: “Our sincere thanks go to Cruise Whitsundays for their business and trust in the Austal team.”
