Australian Vanadium Limited says its integrated vanadium and manufacturing capability underpins an Expression of Interest submitted for the Western Australian Government’s proposed Kalgoorlie Vanadium Battery Energy Storage System (VBESS), a project aimed at long-duration energy storage and regional economic development.
AVL and its wholly owned subsidiary VSUN Energy have lodged a Stage One EOI for the project, which seeks a 50 MW, 10-hour vanadium flow battery system under a build-own-operate model.
In an ASX announcement, AVL said the State Government has committed $150 million to the initiative as part of its strategy to strengthen energy security in the Goldfields and support a more resilient local economy.
The company said its submission draws on a vertically integrated value chain spanning upstream resource development, local electrolyte manufacturing and downstream battery deployment in Western Australia.
This includes progress on the Australian Vanadium Project in the Mid West, operation of the State’s only vanadium electrolyte manufacturing facility, and development of Project Lumina, a modular utility-scale vanadium flow battery architecture designed for Australian conditions.
AVL chief executive Graham Arvidson described the project as strategically significant for both the company and the State. “The Kalgoorlie VBESS project is a pivotal opportunity for AVL and for the development of long-duration energy storage in Western Australia,” he said.
“Our EOI reflects years of investment and preparation to deliver utility-scale vanadium batteries supported by local supply chain solutions.”
According to AVL, the submission emphasises local manufacturing content, regional job creation and alignment with the State’s objectives for energy resilience and industry diversification.
The EOI was prepared with input from industry participants across technology, engineering and finance.
Stage One submissions are expected to be assessed in February 2026, with further stages subject to government evaluation.
AVL noted that submission of an EOI does not guarantee progression or contract award.
