Manufacturers are facing an increasingly volatile environment, where rapid changes in demand, supply chain disruptions, and continued cost pressures are transforming the way products are planned, made, and delivered.

In response, artificial intelligence is increasingly being embedded into enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, not only to improve internal efficiency, but to serve as the foundation for intelligent, connected supply chains.

Rather than reacting to disruption after it occurs, manufacturers are shifting toward predictive supply chain orchestration – where AI supports forecasting demand changes, optimising inventory levels, and automating supplier responses in real time.

According to SAP, AI capabilities embedded within ERP systems enable organisations to improve decision-making by connecting operational data across functions and applying predictive analytics to planning and execution.

It notes this shift allows manufacturers to anticipate supply shortages, adjust production schedules dynamically, and coordinate logistics more efficiently – reducing delays and improving resilience across the value chain.

Smart ERP becomes the backbone of connected supply chains

At the centre of this shift is the rise of smart ERP systems that unify supply chain operations into a single digital environment. Instead of functioning in silos, procurement, production, and delivery processes are increasingly connected through shared data and automated workflows.

GROW with SAP is designed to support this transition, particularly for mid-market manufacturers looking to modernise operations through cloud-based ERP adoption. The platform provides a standardised foundation that unifies supply chain data from procurement through to delivery, improving visibility across both internal operations and external partners.

SAP notes that this integrated approach helps organisations align supply and demand more effectively while improving responsiveness to rapidly changing market conditions.

How manufacturers are applying cloud ERP in practice

Manufacturers adopting GROW with SAP are already demonstrating how cloud ERP and embedded intelligence can reshape operations.

Western Sugar Cooperative implemented SAP S/4HANA Cloud to replace heavily customised legacy systems, enabling more standardised processes and improved operational control across procurement and finance. The company has also used SAP’s AI capabilities to automate invoice processing, reducing manual workloads and improving efficiency across supplier payments.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Clyde Bergemann has used SAP’s cloud ERP foundation to streamline global operations, improve process consistency, and strengthen visibility across international business units – supporting more coordinated decision-making and operational transparency.

Ferrotec Manufacturing Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. provides another example of how GROW with SAP can support rapid expansion. When the company established a new manufacturing site in Kulim, Malaysia, it needed to deploy an ERP system quickly while laying the groundwork for future growth.

By adopting SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition, through SAP GROW, Ferrotec established a flexible cloud-based IT system that reduced manual work and improved data accuracy.  SAP reports the impact has been significant: finance team productivity increased by 40%, procurement efficiency rose by 90%, and supply chain costs were reduced by 50%. The standardised platform is also expected to support further regional expansion and integration across its global operations.

Driving smarter supply chains with AI-powered ERP

AI-powered ERP is giving manufacturers clearer, end-to-end visibility across the supply chain – transforming real-time data into forward-looking insights. With this intelligence, organisations can anticipate disruptions, respond faster to demand shifts, and optimise sourcing and inventory with greater precision.

Amid growing operational complexity, SAP’s AI-driven ERP solutions, including SAP Business AI and GROW with SAP, aim to enable more adaptable and data-driven business processes.

Businesses looking to better understand how AI-powered ERP is improving supply chain resilience are encouraged to register for SAP’s upcoming webinar, “Future-Ready Digital Manufacturing: Harnessing AI to Transform and Modernise the End-to-End Supply Chain.”
