Australian Made Week 2026 has officially kicked off at the MCG, spotlighting the local manufacturing behind one of Australian sport’s most recognisable features — the AFL’s “big sticks”.

The opening event brought together workers involved in producing the goal posts used at major stadiums nationwide, manufactured by Abel Sports, an official licensee of Australian Made.

Abel Sports general manager John Cann said the goal posts represent a much wider manufacturing effort than many people realise.

“Our goal posts and flag poles are installed across the country including the MCG, Adelaide Oval, SCG/ALLIANZ Stadium, Optus Oval as well as multiple recreation grounds and schools across the country,” Cann said.

“While the product is ours, it relies on the craftsmanship and manufacturing expertise of a broader local supply chain.”

He said bringing together workers from across that chain was a rare opportunity to recognise their role.

“It’s humbling to receive the recognition for an Australian Made product that we think 90 per cent of the population would see or interact with throughout the various sporting seasons,” he said.

Cann also pointed to the scale of the broader employment footprint linked to production, beyond Abel Sports’ direct workforce.

Suppliers involved include Capral, Australian Reinforcing Company, and C-Tech Laser.

Australian Made chief executive Ben Lazzaro said the week is about showcasing the breadth of local production and its impact.

Lazzaro said Australian Made Week, which runs until Sunday, will shine a light on homegrown creators and makers.

He said choosing Australian-made products had wider economic effects, citing research suggesting increased household spending locally could generate billions and thousands of jobs.

Australian Made Week runs from 18 to 24 May 2026, encouraging consumers and businesses to look for the green and gold kangaroo logo when making purchasing decisions.
